Contemporary Research in Financial Accounting and Governance

Summary:  This course is a doctoral-level introduction to empirical financial accounting and governance topics. The course is targeted for doctoral students in accounting and related disciplines.

Overview:  The course will cover select topics in financial reporting, disclosure, and governance; with applications to both corporate and nonprofit/public sector entities.  The course goals are to help prepare doctoral students to conduct their own research in this field.  We will study a variety of recent work in order to introduce you to the latest developments in the area, as well as a few “classics,” to help you identify potential summer paper/dissertation topics. 

Teaching approach:  The course format will primarily be interactive in nature, with student presentations and discussion.   

Course material:  A pre-course reading packet of approximately 10 published articles and working papers will be assigned. 

Registration: Students for the course will be selected in the order of registration. Due to the nature of the course it is limited to a maximum of 15 participants. Priority will be given to KATAJA members (e.g. students belonging to GSA). Registration should be done via e-mail to the Departmental Coordinator Noora Kedonperä (noora.kedonpera@utu.fi)

Grading requirements: Term paper, discussion, and written exercises. 

Grading:  Grading will be on a scale of 0-5, 6 ECTS cr units.

Venue and time: Sessions will be held in the Turku School of Economics at the University of Turku, Rehtorinpellonkatu 3, 20500 Turku. The course comprises two related parts. First part will be 5 Mar - 9 Mar 2012, and the second part 16 Apr -20 Apr 2012. More specific schedule will be announced later.

Invitation to the Tutorial of Management 20.–21.8.2012 in Jyväskylä!

The Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics warmly welcomes doctoral students and researchers to the Tutorial of Management 20.-21.8.2012 in Jyväskylä.

The Tutorial of Management provides an excellent opportunity for doctoral students to present their research and to receive constructive feedback. In addition, doctoral students and tutors have the possibility to discuss current issues, change ideas and network with each other. The papers will be presented and discussed in small group sessions consisting of doctoral students and tutors. The tutorial will take place in Mattilanniemi campus, which is in walking distance from Jyväskylä city center. Limited number of rooms has been reserved for participants in Hotel Alba, located in the campus area.

Doctoral students and tutors can register for the tutorial through registration form available on the web site. Doctoral students are asked to submit a short abstract (no more than 200 words) with registration. The registration begins February 1st, 2012 and ends April 30th, 2012.
