Kurssikuvaus: The course aims to provide an overview of current research methods and methodological approaches in management accounting research.

Pidempi kurssikuvaus: The course will discuss the different research methods used in management accounting, with a particular focus on field research and survey research. It will start by exploring the methodological underpinnings of the different research methods, and it will then provide an overview of the methods used in both field and survey research. After having successfully completing the course, the student will understand the various methodological approaches and the different research methods currently used in management accounting research. The main topics include:
- methodological approaches in management accounting research
- overview of recent developments in management accounting research
- field research in management accounting
- case study research methods
- survey research in management accounting
- survey methods and statistical analysis
The course will discuss recent developments and current research topics in the field of management accounting. Considerable emphasis will be placed on enhancing the students’ ability not only to understand, but also to debate and critique current issues in contemporary management accounting research.

Muuta: Immediately after the course, the ENROAC conference (June 5-7, 2013) will take place. It will be a good opportunity for the PhD students to participate the high level international conference during their visit in Jyväskylä. For the conference, look:

Kurssin tavoitteet: After having successfully completed the course, the student will understand the methodological bases of the different methods and the current issues in management accounting research.

The deadline for registration is 15 March 2013. A maximum number of 25 participants will be admitted.

Teaching approaches: Teaching will take the form of a combination of lectures, group work, student presentations and debates. Students are expected to participate in all sessions of the course.

Sessions: From Monday (12-18), Tuesday 8-18, Wednesday, 8-12 (20 h): lectures, discussions and group work.

Course material: A pre-reading package of about 20 research articles or book chapters. All articles should be available in e-journal databases of university libraries (ScienceDirect, EBSCO, ProQuest, etc.) or in the journal webpages. If you have problems with downloading, please be in contact with the course coordinator.

Kurssin arviointi: A written report in which the students will review the research methods and the methodological underpinnings of developments in management accounting research over the past 10 years and which seeks to locate the topic(s) of their PhD research in the context of these developments. The report should be returned by August 31, 2013. Further information on the content and length of the report will be provided during the course.

Kohderyhmä: Doctoral students in accounting, at various stages of their doctoral studies.
